Many moons ago, I made this series of colour wheels in which I painted little symbols of the natural sources I extract my pigments from. Here are four of the wheels I conceptualised. All of them provide the same information about the pigment sources, but show various ways of expressing them.
I extracted nearly all the pigment from natural materials found in my local surroundings. All except the indigo pigment, which I bought from a local business, and mulled into a paint with gum Arabic.
Pigments clockwise from the red;
Madder root, Rubia cordifolia
Red soil, Indian peninsular region
Marigold flower, Tagetes
Hibiscus flower, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis
Verdigris, Copper acetate
Indigo pigment, Indigofera tinctoria
Now, won’t it be nice to have these symbols as little visual clue within every commissioned painting I make? It could tell the viewer exactly which natural sources have been made into the colour!
Prints of this colour wheel are available on my Redbubble shop here
